Not yerf...

The value of backups...

I'm not sure how many of you visit, Yerf on a regular basis or at all.   As far as I'm concerned I feel that Yerf is one of the best places on the net to find high quality anthromorphic artwork.  In addition to the quality of the artwork, all of it's work and family safe (for the most part), unlike similar achives such as VCL due to strict guidelines.  It's been around since 1999, and has been the center of many artist controversies and dicussions.  One thing always has remained though, the quality of the work.  Now a myriad of artwork uploaded by various artists over a six year period finds itself in trouble.  The short and long version of what happened can be found here.

If Yerf were to go down, I for one would miss it.  It's not the end of the world of course, but I did enjoy broswing the site about once a week or once every other week.  I enjoyed the variety of styles and the creativity to be found.  As much as I like DA, it's just not the same (since DA is pretty diverse compared to Yerf) and VCL is a tad too distasteful at times.

Has anyone else browsed through Yerf on occasion?
I've never heard of Yerf. Sound intresting though. I'll have to check it out. Maybe I can find pretty good artists and animators there. :)
Yerf more or less is like the center for the "elite" well in my books anyway..or how I have always seen it. You know cream of the crop, best of the best and all that. But if your trying to get a good critique out of them if your a beginning artist be prepared to have your work torn apart. Now I'm not saying critiques aren't essential for the development of talents but nitpicking or just being plain about it like a drill seargant who just got back from the dentist and while suffering a severe case of hemroids isnt going help anyone but satisfy ones ego. being harsh and to the point isnt bad but finding ways to soften the blow and explaining it in a good manner can realy get someone moving along. which is what I do And i like helping anyne out if ever they have a problem .. especially those art related.
I've heard of it, but never actually visited it.
I just looked at it, and it said Yerf was down. I didn't look why though. :p
I browsed a little bit, and I liked it as a source. I'm not really all that interested in furry art, but there was alot of cool stuff there.

The thing that struck me more, being an ameteur web author, was the fact that such an expansive, user-sourced site didn't have a system for regular backups. That was... obviously not good forethought. ^^;;

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from, Winter.  I also think it depends on who reviews your work.  But if it's in the forums, than yeah...  ^_^;

The thing that I enjoy the most about Yerf is probably the fact that you browse through it and not find anything distastful like on VCL.  Just to prove my point, I browsed through VCL a day or two ago and found more smut than non-smut on the first page alone. >_<

I enjoy looking at furry art as well as non-anthromorphic stuff.  I should probably get a picture or two of all the prints and a few of the originals I've collected (including commissions). ;)

Same here, 27.  It's just a shame that considering how popular Yerf is, that the server's owner was a bit careless with backups.  I'm sure he's learned a good lesson and I hope the data recovery goes well.  For all the time and effort involved with Yerf, you'd think backups would be number one on the list.  ???
I got no beef with you know the adult stuff.. but i tend to draw more on a cleaner side. But even if i do a mature or adult piece it tends to be tasteful and not all spoogey and disgusting.. But i will always be into mostly the Cute stuff but you know i keep the dirty stuff away from you silver LOL

And on another not sheezyart seems to be digging their own grave by not allowing Adult art on their site.

I don't mind some tasteful nudity, but most of the stuff I come across seems to be reather distasteful.  Heh.

I thought adult art and the like were allowed at SA?  Wasn't that one of the reasons why there seemed to be a mass exodus from DA to SA?  More freedom, or so I believed.  Besides, aren't the warnings and blocked images enough?  SA must be furry friendly, seems like everytime I hear about them, it's always some new drama. ;)
well apprently as i told you i think on aim that they dint want adult art well their webhost didn't want adult art on their servers.. so it could be more family friendly.but thats not what most of us are in an uproar about its the fact that we believe if they couldnt host adult art why tell us now? and the mods and admin are a joke, but then again they are only 17..     I mean when a high mod uses the phrase " If i told you that then I would have to kill ya. ;P)  but you know getting rid of the adult art isnt whats cheesing people off its the fact that we all felt stabbed in the back.. we were like hey join shezy art its great lots of cool stuff and your free to post any images you want... people joined sheezy got popular and then you cant do this this and this! like i mentioned earlier if they couldnt post adult stuff and wanted to be a family oriented artsite.. then it should have stayed like that at the beginning  instead of all thse false promises and crap we bascially felt cheated.  and if the mods cant get their act together and not thinking things through well then its gonne be more of the same
I actually sat there and read through some of those comments and I agree with you.  Personally, I care nothing for artwork of that kind.  Even though I'm not a member of SA, I do see where all of the concern comes from.  It's not the fact that SA's ditching their adult art section, it's the fact that they promised something they knew was wrong.  If their host did not allow for adult rated artwork, why did they press their luck by allowing it?  A lot of people flocked from DA to SA for some measure of "freedom", surely they knew that the increase in traffic would bring attention to themselves.  So in the end they have no one to blame for screwed up policy than themselves.  Never keep a promise that big that you KNOW you can't keep.

As I read through the threads, the mods and admin did seem immature.  They were selective in replying to comments (some of which were quite inqusitive), and were a bit childish at times.  It seemed as if they lacked some professionalism, which angered some people more than the loss of the the adult artwork.  SA still has a lot of growing to do in my eyes.
I would say that true art is a freedom of expression so if Yerf doesn't allow certain types of art then it is surely it is doing it all wrong. Personally I don't look at it, at all same as I don't look at VCL or DA or any of the others. Well I don't look at DA as when I tried to originally the servers were so painfully slow! But I'm sure everyone knows by now why I don't look at such things so not gonna repeat myself :P

On a broad scale, that is very true.  But at the same time I can understand their reasons for doing so.  At the time (not much has changed) there was a lot of smut going around in the galleries.  So an archive was created for those who did not wish to view such things.  Yerf's original name was The Squeaky Clean Artist Archive, with an emphasis on being suitable for all ages.  I'm not sure when the emphasis on the quality of artwork came in, but originally novice artists were allowed to join too.  Considering the fact that it is the internet, I don't see it as being too limited since there are numerous less restrictive places to visit.

DA has gotten a lot better with server speed, now they just need to work on their downtime and glitches.  >_<
LOl you should see Sheezy now.. the atmosphere just became dark and stupid.. hardly enjoyable anymore.. especiallywhen you got those anti furry mingling around the forums trying to make logical statements about fantasy creatures that dont even exist. sure they talk smart like they are wrirting a college essay or book report with an extensive vocabulary and superior language skills, but in the end they sound just about as ignorant as UNE DAT TYPEZ LIKE DAIS LOL XD Ktnx BYE! LOLZ Ther is no logic in furry art its A-R-T!
Is it just me, or is Yerf still down? It keeps tellign me this. Does that happen to anyone else here????
It's been a day since you posted Zidane, and it says it's still down. I think their server must have exploded XD
Uhh, it will continue to be down for a long time... They had severe hard drive failures.
They did have some serious data recovery issues to address.  All that remains of Yerf right now is the Live Journal Community.
Heh yes, I'm a hopeless yerf addict. From all the time surfing the boards I never saw 'dentist recovery hemaroid drill sargent' replies in the criteque forum. Just good honest help with reffs.

I miss it dearly, I visit it every day-or did anyhoo. Loved all the topics and discussions on there! I hope they get it recovered soon!:(
Turns out the recovery was a failure, the damage was too extensive. So, I guess they'll be using the donated money to rebuild Yerf from the ground up.  Talk about a hard learned lesson indeed. =/

LOL! Okay, it's been a while. It should maybe work.

EDIT: Nope, still down.
It won't be up again until they buy a replacement server.
