Now I know a lot of people dislike Walt Disney's Bambi simply because they think it's all happy fun and cutesy animals. But those who have seen it know it isn't so, it does have darker elements and a deep moral. Here's an interesting little bit of trivia from IMDB.com: "Bambi was originally supposed to go back to his mother after she was shot and find her in a pool of blood. This idea was scrapped." Kind of gives you a new perspective on Walt Disney, eh?
Having purchased the Platinum Edition DVD of this film, I saw it for the first time in over ten years, and I've become obsessed with it. It's right up there with my list of great animated films. I even went so far as to purchase the soundtrack(I love "Little April Shower", and the music from the meadow scene, when the Great Prince appears).
It's amazing how long ago they made this movie: for it's day, the animation is revolutionary, and still stands the test of time. I can see why it is such a beloved classic. Sooner or later I'm going to grab myself a copy of the book by Felix Salten, to see what it's like by comparison.
What about you guys, any Bambi fans out there?
Only thing I'm wondering about is, does the Great Prince ever smile? He's always so dead serious.

Me too Funkee puppee! I love bambi so much, I go the special edition DVD. I haven't watched it yet, but it has been so many years since I have seen Bambi. Anyways, I think Disney should have put the scene that Aniu1983 mentioned. Where Bambi finds her mother dead in a pool of blood. That part would have made me cry. Anyways, bambi is the best!!!!!!!!!!!
Wolfen~ on with Bambi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To Shrdex-Bambi is a whitetail.
I LOVE the animation in this movie- handrawn animation is a dying art and it's good to see how beautiful it is in a film.
However, the only think I don't like about this movie is the strong, negative veiw on hunting. Hunting controls populations where natural predators have been whiped out, and in a lot of cases hunting can really benefit a species, but must be done responsibly.
For example- I wouldn't mind hunting deer in my area, as they are overpopulated. I would not hunt rabbits because they are under-populated (because the coyotes are OVERpopulated because everybody killed off the red wolves that killed the coyotes that ate the rabbits). But other than all the anti-hunting propaganda, I think it's a good movie.

Yes That scene would make me cry too.

I've loved the story of Bambi ever since I was 6! I've grown up with story! I love it! I bought the platinum edition and it just floods back memories. And do u know they r making a midequal about Bambi? Its called Bambi and the Great Prince of the Forest. U can see the preview on the DVD and its scheduled for Spring 2006. Its about after Bambi's mom got shot and how the Prince raises him. More Bambi!

I've heard about the midquel for quite awhile now.

I recently rediscovered the goodness that is Bambi. Haha, what a coincidence... lol... really, I just watched it last week when I found the old VHS. VHS, of course, so it was a bit fuzzy... but yeah, I'm hoping to get the DVD son enough.
I love Bambi. When I was little, I thought it was really boring, but I like it much more now that I'm older.
And speaking of age, the movie is rather old... it's easy to find little glitches in there, isn't it? You know the part where all the animals are getting onto the island thing after the fire? You see a raccoon mother licking an unconscious (sp?) uh... raccoon-baby? I forget the name of them.. but yeah, two seconds later, without warning, the little baby is suddenly on the other side of the screen and the mom keeps licking. :P
The midquel looks horrible. -.-' It's been bashed for a month or so now at RWTW... <_<
Haha.. I keep imagining a midquel about Bambi's mother being a fur coat... XP 83-108302525609 Mar 2005, 05:02 UTC
I think the midquel looks Promising

I'm renting the movie right now, to go along with my new DVD Player!!!
finally I can be a part of the 21st century
I didn't see the film itself yet. I wen't to the bonus features first .. and listened to the commentary . it is such an awesome movie that I actually cried at the end ..*cries* . so moving . but I've never heard anything about a pool of blood with the mother's body ( I call her Mrs. Doe sometimes) just that they had her fall to the ground in the early concepts..
I'd bawl my eyes out if that really happened . and if Bambi II is really crappy . 65-106196054209 Mar 2005, 11:53 UTC
NeonFlash, about that error you mentioned, it's apparently been corrected in the DVD, or so I've heard. Having watched the scene myself, I didn't spot it, so I guess it has been fixed.
Gee, I wonder how those animators managed to get by with that during the film's production, seems somebody would have noticed!
I'm obsessed with this film now(I'm always obsessed with something on any given day of the year). I've searched for fan sites and RPG's, it's a pity I haven't found anything. 83-106196071109 Mar 2005, 13:11 UTC
I love Bambi too, can't wait for the sequel either!

Lol, I keep imagining one of her head hanging on somebody's wall, probably a certain person's that I know of ( no names here! ). OK, so it would be sad, but maybe even a little bit funny in a twisted, morbid kind of way... or then again maybe not...71-109168036909 Mar 2005, 23:43 UTC
I saw the trailer for it. I don't know if it will be any good or not. The animation looks nice for the most part though.
65-106196054210 Mar 2005, 12:49 UTC
I'll definitely be getting the 'midquel', as the Great Prince is my favorite character. He's gorgeous. Even if he's portrayed incorrectly in the new movie, it won't matter to me much, I just like his character design.
70-110747806810 Mar 2005, 22:38 UTC
Cool! Where did you see the trailer, greykitty?
66-109650395311 Mar 2005, 20:25 UTC
Bambi is a great movie, I love the animation and the background. About a month ago we watched Bambi in Art class, and I fell in love with the movie all over again, and I wanted to watch it over and over, but there was a problem. I did not own Bambi on VHS and thanks to disney, and there locking up all the classics a re-releasing like years later, I could not buy it. But now there selling it again so its all good
and I can say it again Bambi is a great movie filled with emotion and love, its a great story that every one must see
I also saw the trailer for the new movie it looks good, I will probably buy it when it comes out, or maybe just rent it off of netflix 70-110747806811 Mar 2005, 21:31 UTC
does anyone here know where I can see a trailer for the new movie?

I`ve already watched Bambi Special Edition twice. I really love that movie. One of the best, next to Lion King.
Looking forward to Bambi and the Great Prince of the Forest.

The only really appealing thing about the movie, to me, was the beautiful job they did with the scenery. The multi-plane system they developed worked wonderfully, the artists did an excellent job, and I love their style.
The thing that I dislike most about the movie was how incredibly much they butchered the plot/script compared to the book it was based on; it's not like they improved it, they made it quite terrible.
I feel that the characters were pretty well animated, and they chose talented voice actors, well suited to their role (I particularly liked that old owl, got a kick out of his voice). The only problem was that they weren't utilized very well, due mostly to the poor plot/script revisions.
The music was certainly nothing I'd buy the soundtrack for, enough said. ^_^;;
In the end, I'd watch it again, but only to enjoy the scenery.\n\n

Well, if you dislike a film, you're not going to appreciate it's music much, I suppose. Everyone gets a different impression from film music.
I love the film, however, so "Little April Shower" and "Gallop of the Stags" is among the best music I've heard in any film, animated or otherwise. Film scores are virtually the only genre I have in my CD collection, save for Enya CDs.
I'm currently in the process of reading Felix Salten's book, and it hasn't degraded my appreciation of the film. All of the basic plot lines are there, so everything's okies with myself. But then, who'd expect anything less from a film buff like me? Having read many books and seen the resulting films, I've never really met one I hated.74-110782676107 Apr 2005, 20:43 UTC
Yup! 'Bambi 2' I can't wait to see that too! I'm a Bambi fan =3

That may be true for most people, since music tends to be associative in appreciation, but it lacks accuracy with me. I'm an enthusiastic musician, and I tend to pay more attention to the score of a movie than anything else.
In this case, it simply lacks substance to me, being rather reminiscent of that 40's-50's era of rather simple orchestration (for obvious reasons, naturally). Hey, if that's your style, or you just like music that reminds you of a movie you love, so be it! Just understand that my opinion of a movie's score isn't tainted by my appreciation of the movie itself. That's what I meant by "enough said"; I assumed most of you knew how much I like music.
As far as the plot in relation to the book, even with all the main courses in order, they can still take away/change so much content, which is exactly what is usually done in the film industry. While that doesn't always make me dislike the film for that reason, I don't appreciate it being done. Bambi just went too far, in my opinion. Obviously, everyone is free to draw their own conclusions. :P\n\n

Having finished the book yesterday, I think I like the film version better, generally. The film had parts that were so much more moving than the book: however, the bit at the end where Bambi and his father come across the dead human, and draw conclusions that "there is Another, above us and above Him" is some of the most beautiful literature I've ever read. Some people might take this as an implication of God, but since I'm an atheist/agnostic, I just appreciated the idea. Wonderful dialogue in that scene.
Music from that time period never used to appeal to me, but since my acquisition of a love for film music, I can appreciate scores from movies as far back as the 20's, maybe even a bit further. I just love film scores in general, with no preference for the time period. In the case of Bambi, Walt Disney wanted a 'Beethoven-esque' score, and it works beautifully, in my opinion.
But like you said, TLW, you do have a love for music, and I understand that one person won't always like the same orchestral score as another.
