A Mistake

It was a cold rainy night in the Alasken wilderness, and in a small wolf's den, a white wolf was curled into a corner trying to keep warm against the cold evening air. The wolf's name was Aniu, and several months ago she met, fell in Love with, and bore the pups of a Siberian Husky. And amidsd her warm fur, a small two-brown-toned Wolf-dog hybrid pup's head stared out at the entrance to the cave unable to sleep.
"Mama?" asked the pup as he rolled his eyes to his mother, "Are you asleep?" The Ivory colored lupine rose her head to look at her son.
"No Balto, though I'm trying."
"I'm sorry Mama." the young pup apologized.
"Oh don't be sweety. I've never been able to sleep during a rainstorm anyway." The wolf said. "What's wrong Balto? Did you have a bad dream?"
"No." Balto said bluntly, followed by an awkward pause.
"Well then what's wrong my son?"
The hybrid paused, forming the words needed for this most delicate subject that was his parentage. "Mama? Was I a, 'mistake'?"
Aniu's eyes widned farther then one would expect, her body tensed a like she smelled the scent of an enemy, her teeth clenched like a Bear Trap on it's pray. Before answering Aniu took a few breaths to calm herself.
"Who told you that Balto?" she asked the young one in forced calm.
"I heard some of da growd ups talking today, and I heard them say I was a mistake. Is that true Mama?"
'Ah yes, Wind Fur and her friends have been speaking ill too loud for their own good again.' the She-Wolf thought to herself. 'Heads WILL roll tomorrow.' She continued in her mind, using a phrase that she had heard the young male that gave her her son state when he was truely mad at someone.
"Of course not Balto. You were a little miracle." she stated comfortantly to her young one. "What your Papa and I had was True Love, and True Love is NEVER a mistake, and don't let anyone tell you different."
"But why do people say that mean stuff Mama?"
Aniu sighd. How does one even begin to discribe the prejudices and discrimminations between dogs, humans and wolfs to someone so young when you don't understand it all yourself? "No one can really say for sure young one, but I can say this, your Papa was better then any wolf I've ever met. Balto, you have a very proud Heritage on BOTH sides, the wolfs are the oldest canines and among the wisest creatures on the planet, and Husky's have the noble purpose to help others everyday. Which your Papa did all the time."
"Do you think Papa woulda liked me Mama?"
"Liked you? Oh sweet heart he would have adored you!"
"Tell me about Papa again Mama. Pleeeeeeeeease?" the young wolf/dog pleaded.
"Oh okay," Aniu gave in, she always loved to talk about the male that gave her this little joy, and Balto was always eagar to hear. "he was a very kind soul, nearly impossible to get him to act purely on hate as most do. He somehow managed to see the good in others, and tried to live a peaceful life." She paused a moment to wipe a budding tear from her eye. "He didn't deserve to pass on as he did, and now you are all I have left of him." she paused again to take in a shaky breath. "I can only hope you become half the dog he was Balto."
"Oh I will Mama!" the young pup stated proudly. "One day I'm gonna be the bestest sled dog their was!" the young halfling exclaimed, leeping around the den.
Aniu chuckled at her sons bravado. 'He not only looks so much like his father,' she though, 'but he also has his endearing optimissum.'
"I have no doubt that you will my little one," Aniu told her child with a barely held in chuckle in her voice. "But you must not just honor one Heritage, yet forget the other, you must remeber both."
"Oh I won't Mama! I'll remember even if I wind up living with a goose who doesn't fly and two polar bears who can't swim!"
At this Aniu laughed out completly at these absurd examples of real creatures. "Oh I'm sure son, but even the greatest sled dog of the North needs his rest. Now, back to bed Balto." Aniu said as she picked up the pup and brought him back to their spot in the den, much to the pup's complaints.
"But Mama!" the pup exclaimed, "I'm not sleepy!"
"Well just try to then" his mother offerd.
The pup reluctantly agreed with a nod and lowered his head and closed his eyes. And not even two seconds later he was dead to the world, leaving Aniu to her thoughts.
"Oh my love." She whispered to the air as she looked Heaven-ward. "I hope you can see this little joy you have left me. I wish you didn't have to be taken away from me, just when things were starting to go our way. Please give me the strangth to watch over our son love, he is all I have to remind me of you."
Another tear formed at her eyes, but this time she didn't care. She watchd it roll down her muzzle and then fall to the ground, soon fallowed by it's bretheren. She was tired of holding this pain in all the time, preventing giving others a foothold against her, she wanted to let it all out, talk about how she felt to someone she could truely trust. Her father was dead, but he wouldn't have understood anyhow, her mother was supportive of her, but it was obvious that she dispised her own Grandchild, her dear friend Nava was trustful, but he just ignored this problem and denied it's existence, which Aniu knew never solved anything in the long run, it just made it all worse, and while the Alpha's were wise, they had never been delt with this sort of thing before and were unsure of how to handle it peacefully, She was on her own with this burden. And for once, she hated it. But she was strong, and she would continue to be strong, if mearly for the sake for her little Balto.

My first COMPLETED Balto fic! Can you beleive I wrote ALL this TODAY!? Anyway, I have the start of one on my computer, butI've long abandond it. This is a One-Shot, meaning it only has one chapter and covers a single event. There is no character Wind Fur to my knowledge, I just made the name up on the spot out of necesity, nothing more. Tell me what you think everyone!
