I've always thought of "Balto" as a close match to "Baltic" as in the European sea. I'm sure their is a meaning to "Baltic," possibly even Nordic in orgins, but I'm too lazy to hunt up the meaning, if any.

I believe Balto and Togo were both named after explorers that were admired by Sepalla

Actually, I just discovered today that Togo was named after a Japanese war general. I pulled the information from that book I babbled about at the Balto LJ community. ^_^;

A curious find, slightly off topic: the name "Boris" means "one who battles". LOL

On the serum run there was a musher who's lead dog was named Star. I'm not sure if that's a solid connection, but you never know. ;)

i'm going to be honest, i diodn't really like the sequal, the animation was poor, the songs were not needed, and the voices were not veryngood, they should have stuck with the animation from balto's first movie and should have used soemone like gweneth pathrow or leelee sobeski to play aleu.

Balto (the real one) was named after a Russian explorer. I've tried forever to find out what 'Aleu' meant, so thanks! The 'Aleutian Islands' sounds pretty accurate to me, at least.

Just in case you didn't know:
Kodi - Kodiak Island off of Alaska (Yeah, Kodiak . . . like the bear and the camera film)

Actually Balto was named after Samuel Johannesen Balto, a Norwegian man.
*edit.*
Whoops, nearly forgot to link to the source of my information. The Adventures of Balto: the Untold Story.\n\n

I agree with Snow Wolf, I think It's a play on the name of the Boots115-110950221401 Mar 2005, 13:14 UTC
In romanian Aleu is sorta like "Aoleu!" wich is a exclamation like Why me?, dont think that is the meaning though.
P.S. My and my friends have fun when Aleu and balto are having trouble with the bear yelling "Aoleu!" because its sense cant be precisely translated in english because in romanian the closest word is Vai de mine! (Whous me!
and even it has more senses. 115-108568278501 Mar 2005, 19:56 UTC
In wolf quest, Aleu is pronunciated the same way as in english. So it is pronunciated "Alou", and "lou" is exactly the same as "loup" which means wolf....At first I thought that it was on purpose, but seeing that it's not the case in english, I know that it's just a coincidence.

steet i think you are the best balto's fan
115-110950221404 Mar 2005, 12:31 UTC
Balto's name came from the name of Samuel Johannsen Balto a famous Sami and fellow norwegian who had lived in Alaska for 24years and died shortly before Balto was born.

One thing I'd like to know is where they got Aniu from.
83-108302525611 Mar 2005, 04:22 UTC
I seem to Recall Someone Here saying Aniu is the Inuit word for snow.
75-111045797911 Mar 2005, 15:28 UTC
'Snow'? *chuckles* How fitting. Anyway, I probably sound stupid for asking, but who's Togo? I've heard that name somewhere in this section. Wasn't he the lead dog in one of the real anti-toxen teams that some people say could've gotten the medicen to Nome?
116-109430913211 Mar 2005, 16:02 UTC
Togo was the fastest dog in Alaska in 1925, the lead dog of Leonard Seppala, who was the owner of Balto too.
