It drives me insane calling the Elite Four the Elite Four! There are five of them! Four before the Champ ,and the Champ! If 4+1=5 then I'm right.

Because the Elite Four are the four you must fight. The person at the end, whom the champion is, should be just a normal trainer as yourself. They had fought the elite four and won, thus becoming the champion. You must fight the champion to become the champion yourself. It would not be the Elite Five, because then who would be the champion?

I don't know!It seems they consider the Champ as part of the Elite Four.I think you should battle him/her later so it would be easier.

Actually, they do not consider the champ as the Elite Four. When you say Elite Four, you are talking about the first four you fight. The champ is later on. So it's just the Elite Four + the champ, and there can only be one champ, so they make you battle whomever it is.

I agree with that notion. The Elite Four are only four, because the champ isn't a member. Think about it. If you defeat the Elite Four, then the champ, that makes you the new champ. If the champion was a member of the Elite team, then when you defeated him, you would somehow take his place. So instead of being a pro trainer/ Pokmon Master, the object of the game would be become a member of the Elite? Doesn't really make much sense to take the place of an Elite member.
