Why was jenna so surprised?
A rather pointless topic

At the point in the movie where Balto says "I have the keys to the city", and removes the hinges from a door, and says, "After you", motioning with his paw, Jenna replies with an astonished "Balto..."
Balto, embarrassed, replies with the famous line "Big paws kinda run in my family...at least, uh, one side of my family".
My question is, why was Jenna so surprised by his big paws, since she already knew he was half wolf? Jenna had been present earlier when Rosy's father had told his daughter "He might bite ya honey, he's part wolf." It seems that Jenna would have then realized Balto's lineage, and thus noticed his large paws.

I took that scene to be one written with the adults in the audience in mind...I interpereted it as her sort of gasping and coyly saying Ooooooo BALLLLTO..what big PAWS you have, since big hands, big feet, big noses, big... yeah, you see where I'm going with this. I don't think the size of his paws were what she was thinking about.

I really didn't see it that way at all Vesta. XD
I took it as Jenna truly being surprised by Balto's large paws. However, now that Aniu mentions it really shouldn't have been a surprise. The only thing I could think of is that she was never really that close to Balto before and didn't notice his paws until then. *shrugs.*

Damn, I was just about to ask the same thing..lol..oh well no use now...and way to go Silver on making your 5,000th post!

*watches that scene again* I still think Jenna sounds like she was impressed with Baltos big paws. (hehehe) It probably is 100% innocent, but animators do slip in adult innuendo (like the ending scene) which kids miss totally. It could go either way I think, and you know me, I have some mutant version of the EYG LOL. I can't help it!! I'm an innocent victim of a dirty mind
83-106196071612 Dec 2003, 18:41 UTC
Well that's true, but I still think that scene was innocent. Others however, yeah. ^_^;
Don't feel bad Vesta, I was originally going to mention Steele's paws being the same size as Balto's. Then my mind sorta hit the gutter and I skipped it. XD (Although I'm aware of the contradiction of posting it now.)
Thanks, Lowes! 5000 came fast. ^^

A big dog needs big paws. And speaking of Steele, anybody notice Steele is taller then Rosie?
87-106657333612 Dec 2003, 22:10 UTC
maybe Jenna just has small paws,i mean Dixie has bigger paws than her and how small is Dixie!
65-106196054213 Dec 2003, 03:47 UTC
LOL@Vesta! That could be the case, but I, too, think the scene is probably innocent. I mean, Jenna did look surprised when she said that. I don't see any coyness in her expression at all, IMHO.
65-106196052913 Dec 2003, 17:32 UTC
I think it could be interpreted either way. The coyness angle is definitely there. Look at her face; she looks happier than someone truly shocked would look. Then, after Balto walks forward, her face changes to almost a look of worry, as if she thought she might've offended him with her little tease.
Who knows?
83-106196071613 Dec 2003, 22:47 UTC
Going on that angle, it could have been a look of embrassment.
120-107073974924 Dec 2003, 22:48 UTC
Y'got a point there, now that you mention it. I've never really thought of it that way before, but I believe I'm goin' with Vesta's theory rather than Aniu and Silver's.
106-106196082227 Dec 2003, 21:24 UTC
LOL! Vesta seems partially right! She does look all coyish! Tehhehe!
Steele is taller than Rosie. O.o Wow. I never noticed that! Balto is about the same size as Rosie.

Vesta, I have a dirty mind too don't worry. Tavis and I always joke about that scene
Jenna has toothpick legs. No wonder why she hurt her ankle...wuss.79-109362624003 Sep 2004, 03:35 UTC
XD i noticed that too. her lleeggssss thats one thing that bothers me. oh and HER paws are like dimes
115-108568278503 Sep 2004, 10:00 UTC
I've always wondered what she meant by this; and I still haven't got an opinion on it. But I think it was really an innocent thought...
However, she surely have embarrased him, so that's why she hasn't made another allusion to the wolf part of him...
75-109339658311 Sep 2004, 18:05 UTC
I never got why she was so surprised at Balto's big paws either. I think the big paws make him all that much cuter^^ And I'm also not sure how Jenna can support herself on her teensy paws XP
80-107376962112 Sep 2004, 12:46 UTC
I was always a bit confused by her saying that, I didn't even think his paws were that big, and it certainly wouldn't bother me!
And yeh, Jenna has tiny legs, and that's worse!
116-109498257812 Sep 2004, 22:02 UTC
lol yeah i noticed that look Jenna gave Balto at the end of the movie too its the same look adult Nala gave Simba during can you feel the love tonight lol
75-109339658313 Sep 2004, 20:18 UTC
That's a very good observation
80-107376962118 Sep 2004, 14:39 UTC
That look Nala did really annoyed me and my brother! I can't remember Jenna doing the face though!
67-106196056018 Sep 2004, 14:53 UTC
Maybe Jenna likes big paws...
//CL 80-107376962102 Oct 2004, 15:18 UTC
She looked neither particularly impressed or terribly shocked when she said it, I observed for myself finally today.^^ So I really don't know why she said it.
67-106196056002 Oct 2004, 15:50 UTC
I would say "impressed"
The voice and face expression: "Ohh.. Balto"
Yup.. She is impressed...
//CL 66-109676690317 Oct 2004, 22:54 UTC
Ya,it is kinda odd that she is supprised.lol.
82-109880657027 Oct 2004, 12:09 UTC
Balto says "At least one side of my family" I think it was added just to address how Balto thinks about his wolf side. He never says it is his wolf side with big paws, just kind of something you would realize. I think it was to show his wolf side was "unacceptable" to him and other dogs, at least he thought that, until he realized he should be proud of his heritage.

Excellent point Roku! I never thought of it that way

There is an occurrence similar to this, regarding Balto's feet, that has always bugged me. Remember when Balto had just finished his encounter with the White Wolf and began ascending the cliff face. Nikki proclaims, "Hey, he's got the feet of a wolf dere." To me, that line doesn't fit at all. Any thoughts on why that phrase was used there?
83-108302525626 Nov 2004, 05:11 UTC
I think that line was used to show how amazed Nikki was that Balto could climbe up that very steep moutain

Think about under the hospital also.
