I've been thinking. Some people wonder why Kaltag and Nikki allow Star to hang out with them because he gets on their nerves so much. Could it be possible that Star and Kaltag are brothers? Nikki wouldn't be related to them because he is a different breed.
To me it would make sense that Kaltag has a tag-along little brother on the sled team with him. Star drives Kaltag crazy but Kaltag does care about him. What do you guys think?

Oh my...now that you mention it...SURE! How strange.
69-106279399517 Feb 2004, 01:55 UTC
That makes sense. I don't see why they couldn't be brothers. I'm interested to see what others think.

You know what? I've never thought about the possiblity of Star and Kaltag being brothers. I can't think of a good reason, why they shouldn't be. They don't look too much alike, but then again, Star could be just the runt of the litter. I'm not sure if anyone could really disprove it easily, at least not in my eyes. The fact that the two might be related, makes me see them in another light.
All of this time, I simply assumed Star was hanging around the two to gain status. But, other than Steele, no one really (literally) hits on Star, except Kaltag. It could be a sibling thing, or it might be sheer annoyance. As you say it's just a theory, a really interesting one. Makes me want to go see Balto again. Too bad I have to get to sleep for school soon. ^^;

I thought they would mention they were brothers in the cartoon wouldn't they? It will make the viewers understand why he hits on him all the time...
I just thought he hit Star alot because he says some really silly but funny things.83-106196071617 Feb 2004, 13:24 UTC
Well, no that's why it's just a theory. A valid one, but still just a theory. Such as we know Balto is half husky, but that fact is never mentioned in the movie.

Well in the film it does mention that Balto is half wolf and half dog because steel has often called him 'wolf dog', 'half breed'.84-106196076017 Feb 2004, 22:14 UTC
Wow! I'm getting a lot of responses with this.
You know, in response to Sarah, none of the trio are even addressed by name, let alone their relationships to each other. It took me a long while to figure out which one was Star etc.
I guess I only went there because I'm am so curious about the other characters in the Balto movie. We find out a little about Balto's past, but that's it. Oh well, there's always the third movie:)

Yes, but they never say he's half husky. They just tell us he's half dog, and we're left to assume the type of breed. In fact, the film leaves us with a lot of things to assume, or to figure out for ourselves. So any theories that can't be disproven are welcome. Such as the white wolf's gender theory, and now this one. ;)83-106196070318 Feb 2004, 16:57 UTC

True... *Feels stupid*

I have wondered this on several occasions, I just never gave it a lot of thought. One thing that made me briefly consider it is the fact that both Kaltag and Star have little notches in their ears. It's only a tiny detail, but it does seem like it could be a link between the characters.
70-106196059218 Feb 2004, 18:28 UTC
Either that or like most dogs, they get into fights and have chunks taken out their ears lol. Could happen while racing too.
It is quite probabal that most of the dogs are related at least thinly around Nome as all the kennels would have borrowed dogs etc to breed from.

I wouldn't really agree with Star and Kaltag being brothers, besides of their faces looking some what the say, everything else, doesn't. Star is pretty scrawny and Kaltag is pretty buff. Yes, I know they could be mix breeds but dogs from the same liter usually do look more a like, unless I'm wrong.
This is going to sound weird but I think Steele and Kaltag are more closely related then any of them. Only difference is height and color, but everything else, they look pretty much the same. They both got broad chests and shoulders, both look muscular. They may not be brothers, but maybe cousins, with Star being a second cousin.

Maybe Star and Kaltag don't know their brothers...
And thats an intresting comment that you think Steel and Kaltag could be related because Kaltag does the same, puff up chest as Steel when Kaltag hits Star at times, heh.83-106196071619 Feb 2004, 19:54 UTC
That could be another theory that has merit. Although I was sure that Kaltag was just a husky and Steele was a Malamute. But it really can't be tossed out that easily.
Also, I'm pretty certain that Kaltag and Star would know if they're related. ^^;

Interesting theory, TurtleGirl! I always did think Star and Kaltag looked somewhat alike, and them being brothers would answer a few things. Hmmm, I think I just might incorperate this 'theory' of yours into my fanfiction.....could add some flavor to it. *Nods*

As you mention it. yeah. It may be so o__o.

I guess I was just wondering why Nikki and Kaltag let Star hang out with them if he annoys them so much. It might make more sense if Star was Kaltag's cousin or something.
(I'm putting waaay too much thought into this. Just ignore me.)
65-107815589722 Mar 2004, 16:42 UTC
Well, a relation to one of them would definately tell us why Star is always hanging around with them.
Then again...maybe they aren't related at all. I'm willing to bet that Star is actually a great runner. In fact, he's probably really fast. On sled dog teams, usually the fastest dogs are up front and the strongest in back. Maybe Nikki and Kaltag respect the fact that Star is fast and let him hang with them. What do you think?
84-106196076022 Mar 2004, 16:48 UTC
That's a good point. In fact, watch the scene where Balto decides to join in the race and prove he's the fastest dog. He comes in first but if you look closely, you'll see that Star is not too far behind him.
Besides being fast, Star is just so adorable that it would be hard for anyone not to like him. His friends just won't admit it.

I never thought about it,but they look, in a way, like they could be cousins or,something.

That makes alot of sence. There both huskies right? My bro hangs out with me all the time. Good thinkin.
84-107904132525 Mar 2004, 16:00 UTC
Oh... Welcome Balto da Wolf
Okay.. I never really thought about that...... But, that's cool
65-107815589725 Mar 2004, 16:09 UTC
Personally, I doubt that they are related. I'm holding on to the idea that they respect Star's ability to run. That seems like the most reasonable to me.
But, then again, maybe he is related to one of them. Since we are never told, then all we can do is speculate.
Oh...and welcome to The Icy Boards, Balto da Wolf!
84-107904132525 Mar 2004, 17:05 UTC
Maybe to the ....No offence.... Fat dog.. Was his name Nikki or Kaltag... I don't know

Nikki. *grins gleefully and flounders in front of Silbah and the mods with his one-word post*

Thank you LoneWolf27
I knew it was one of those!

I think Star just hung out with Nikki and Kaltag because he was scrawny and needed some bigger dogs to hang out with. Nikki and Kaltag tolerated him because, although he was pretty dim-witted, he was fun to beat up.
70-106196059226 Mar 2004, 13:22 UTC
I can actually relate the trio situation back to my old school friends. To me Star is a friend, not tolerated but accepted as in my old circle of friends there were a couple of guys (smaller guys) who we used smack around the head etc in the same sorta way. Of course this was never malicious at all, just guys having a laugh but it was always the same 2 that got it. But they were good friends and if anyone outside the group gave them grief, we would stand our ground for them.
84-107904132526 Mar 2004, 15:45 UTC
That's interesting Fluke. But, I love it when Star is beaten up all the time... It's funny
83-106196071626 Mar 2004, 17:36 UTC
Well, he does get smacked around enough to satisfy your entertainment needs, Thunder. ;)

Cool... Thanks Silver!
I'm a little special yet!
