Umm well yeah Balto WAS a dog
No he wasn't.He was part dog, part wolf.I read it in a dog book.
In an interview with someone from the Cleveland Museun They said He was a Dog. I saw it on T.V. I can't remember how long ago, I think it was in 2000
He is a dog as far as I know. I read a book a long time back about him, his story, and how they stuffed him and put him up in a museam somewhere after he died. I cant remember exactly where.
That must be so degrading to be stuffed and displayed to the public and there general amusement. i respect the dead greatly. And puting them up for display has never been a belief of mine.

I also once read in a book that he was a Mal and in another a Samoyed. He was neither, he was a Siberian husky, a pure bred, no wolf what so ever in him
*sighs* I am fairly certain he's a siberian husky.

That's also what the interview said. One book I read said he was half Eskimo Dog half Wolf
Okay,I read a book saying Balto was a dog,but in a show on Balto,it said he was only part dog.I'm thinking someone spreaded a rumor, and then it became so real, that people starting thinking it was the truth, even though it wasn't.

That sounds like a safe guess

This is because (as it's been said many times already) Balto was a dog. The artist actually used Balto for reference as he sculpted the statue. So yeah, that's what Balto really looked like. He was a short and stocky siberian husky with mostly black fur.
Whatever book you read must have been following the animated movie too closely. The author of that book must not have done their homework.
I think it's terribly cruel to put any living thing that has died in a museam for an entertainment. Mostly Balto because he really doesn't deserve that kind of treatment. I think that he shouold have been buried close to the town of Nome and that they should have build a statue there and New York. He deserves a lot of appreciation from his fans and I think that we do that well.
I think( as I said before)that Balto was put in the museam Because of His Historical importance. not for entertainment
Ok Historical Importance....
Universal studio's just said that he was part wolf because it made the movie more interesting, as I would put it. And they made the movie a love storie to. I hate when they put love stories in true stories.

Actually, I don't think the movie "Balto" would have been that good if it were not for the love story part.

Me either. Origanally Universal was going to call the movie and Balto Snowballs. So it may have been the true story that was put in
I have a lot of art that I haven't put on my site yet, I bought it directly from an animator and a lot of the backgrounds and character designs have "Snowballs" writen on them. I was curious so I asked and apparently Snowballs was a different movie that never happened. She said that what happens a lot is that you often get another movie being worked on and when it is axed, characters and other art are often used for the movie that is going ahead so e.g. the Whitewolf design was originally for "Snowballs". We shall never know what it was meant to be
That's really interesting AC
Snowballs, uh? So this was another Amblimation project?

I'm quite the other way on this. I like Balto the character from the films, who AFAIC has nothing to do with the RL Balto. The idea for the film came from historical events, but there's as much connection between the Balto of those events and the film Balto as there is between Charlton Heston and Moses, just because he was in a film called The Ten Commandments. I'm actually glad that whatever tenuous connection with 'history' which existed in the first film was completely severed in the second one. AFAIC the Balto universe is fully self contained and its characters owe nothing to any real life animals.

I read on 1 website, it said that the people of Nome are trying to get Balto's stuffed body from The Museum of Cleavland (if that's how you spell it?), and bring it to the little museum they have. Nome has even offered money, but still that museum won't give it up.

As far as I know it was, But as I said I thought It changed into Balto. I guess I was wrong. so ThankYou Fluke for clearing that up for Me

That's rude! Nome was the town Balto saved and everthing. They should hand it over, pronto!
If I'm not mistaken, Balto DOES move between Cleveland and Alaska. It seems to me that he was just there not long ago...Fluke knows more about that than I do. Balto ended up in the Cleveland Zoo at one point while he was still living which would most likely explain why he resides in the Museum there now. Screeching that they should hand him over pronto to Nome is....well...never mind. He doesn't care where he is, he's been deceased for a long time now, and unlike his animated counterpart, even when he was living, he didn't care where he was or who he was as long as he had a full belly and somewhere sheltered from the wind to sleep at night. The Cleveland Museum has much respect for who Balto was and I imagine that the exhibit which he is part of it more educational and enlightening than as someone said *for entertainment purposes*.
As a matter of fact, in order to educate yourselves, check this website HERE which explains alot of what I just said in a bit more depth and it appears to be written as a page for kids in school to understand.
I also found this information..."Balto is not a permanent display at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. He is stored there and taken out every few years for a "special exhibit." "
So, in conclusion, it is simple to find out simple FACTS before we jump in and form a breath-holding, fit throwing, kicking and screaming mob.

I've read that Balto was the second lead dog, (other wise known as the replacement?). I don't know if that's for sure because at least every site that has info. it's diff. . So you can't really trust every site, and otherwise how did they know Balto's age, they didn't even know when he was born? But that's just me saying that.
Read that again..it says the led dog of the FINAL sled team to bring the medicine...meaning the team changed as they travelled. And assuming that someone did indeed breed the litter Balto was born into, they'd know his age. Sometimes I think folks on this board confuse real life Balto with the *movie* one....
No I'm not saying that I'm confused, or anything. Here read this, http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/sleddogs/balto.html
ive never seen the Balto Statue with my own eyes, cause ive never been 2 NY.. but i have seen pictures...
haha!!! the same thing happens 2 me^
It's acctually kinda funny when you think the animated Balto is stuffed. hehehe....
Actually, that's never really happend to me before. O_o;
To me the RL Balto and the animated one are two seperate inteties. >_>

You know, that's actually a good way of thinking about it *gets in that state of mind and stays there*
Well, In my opinion the movie and the real life are two diferent things, with much things in common.
I have never been in NY, so i couldn't see the statue, I only saw it in some pictures and in the movie.
It has some things in common with the real balto, but i was difficult to me to see those similar characteristics.

I have never been to see the Statue. I would love to see it sometime, though.
i think balto's body should be displayed in the natural history museum in NY along with all the other stuffed animals. I think hed be better appreciated there and it would give the people who have seen the statue something to associate it with.
I have pics of me with the balto statue *grins* and one of my mate picking Balto's nose. =P
